I've Got a Theory...

So I've got a theory about nearly everything. You may or may not like it. You may or may not agree. But I try to base my theories on a combination of reality, idealism and a few drops of water. Join me!

If you can't commiserate with friends about hard work weeks who can you commiserate with? I sent a text to a friend that said; "76 hours this week. Glad it's over. At least I can relax tonight before next week starts". His response: "Your whining makes me weary". Umm... I haven't texted or talked to him in a week and my last conversation was basically saying that the upcoming week was going to be busy. I don't think that word means what he thinks it means...

BUSY: That's a lot of work for seven guys...

Last night was the last night of the deployment. Today, is the final day of config. Currently 71 hours since Sunday. We got a LOT done. Yes, there is stuff to follow up on, but this was a complex project involving multiple software systems, more PCs (about 900) than I realized we had and about 20 people to pull it off with only six IT guys and me to pull it off on our side and the vendor making up the rest of the team.
Learned a lot about Powershell for myself. I'll need to expand that knowledge more. I find it entertaining that 'ls', 'rm' and 'cp' work. This must be because of all the *nix guys who mistakenly type that at CMD. Either that or MS is planning on making their OS even more *nixy. I still prefer a Linux or Mac OS X Bash shell to Powershell, but at least it's an improvement over CMD and has a lot more potential.

PLACEHOLDER (har har): A thought just occurred to me but I have no time to flesh it out into a decent post. So... I was thinking about places that I have been that no longer exist. I was thinking it would be interesting to know about places that you used to go to that no longer exist. Here is an example of what I'm talking about: "In 1984 I discovered a new video store about a mile and a half away from my house. They rented any two RCA CAV video discs along with a player for $5.00 a night. It all came in a canvas bag. I believe the place went out of business in 1991".

Finished Learned Optimism earlier this week. Great read and I thank Talinom and BAN for both nudging me to read it. I don't buy into "positive thinking" self help books, and this book is not that. It's a book that quantifies the source of learned helplessness which can eventually develop into depression. It also provides the information needed to change the way you think about adversity, so that you can use optimism as a tool in a flexible way. And it doesn't dismiss pessimism as something to avoid. It's also a tool to be used as needed and there are situations that warrant using it. So that's my quick and dirty review because I'm super busy right now...

Finally got a chance to wipe the Mac Mini I bought from BAN and do a clean OS installation. Now that I have a first gen iPad (from work) to use, this is going to be fun. When I left home this morning, the Mac was pulling down 2 gigs of updates. I just need to learn how to use iTunes to wipe the iPad.

If you would have asked me 12 years ago what I thought of vi/vim, I would have said, "Who the hell would ever use something so horrible to edit text? Emacs is much easier and it still sucks next to a basic GUI text editor". Today, I want nothing to do with anything other than vi/vim for really flexible editing. Interesting how perspective changed when you learn more.

PHOTOGRAPHY: Optics Question-Why Are My Images Never Sharp?

First I'll say that I suspect the answer is that I need better glass. But, here are the things I've done to try and take really crisp, sharp photos:
1. Shoot at f-stops higher than 11 and as high as 222. Use a tripod3. Clean the lens and make sure it stays clean4. Make sure the subject is well lit if it's a still image (that could mean flash)5. Use the lowest ISO I can
What I noticed the other day when shooting some video with the T2i and Magic Lantern (ML), is that when I use MLs "magic zoom" feature to zoom in on a subject for checking focus, is that I can't get a sharp focus no matter what I do. The sharpest point in the image is still fuzzy. Now this is with the kit lens 18-55mm zoom. I haven't compared the fixed 14mm I have.
Considering that I couldn't afford to buy lenses much over $400 before, and now that's out of the question for a while until I recover from the recent auto purchase, is there anything else I should try in order to get sharp images? S...

Bah!!! Too many meetings. I missed one today because I had it in my mind that it was at 10:00AM and it was at 9:00AM. I even ignored the reminder on my phone and in my web calendar because I was so sure of the time. To make matters worse, this is the SECOND time I've missed a meeting with this group in the course of a month. I guess I need to actually read the reminders no matter how confident I am at remembering the time and date. Just too much going on for me lately.

I'm still not sure why no one seems to talk of the possibility of BSE being transmitted via dairy products. Without that discussion, it's hard to know whether or not the possibility has even been tested. I read a book on BSE a while back that was very interesting even if it did tread into conspiracy theory territory. The basic notion in the book is that not all cases of Alzheimers are genuine Alzheimers. Some are the human form of spongioform

Reflecting on Racism via Racist Memorabilia

NOTE: For the purposes of this article racism refers to anti-black sentiment. There are other forms of racism, but this is not about that.

Sorry... no comments allowed on this one because I don't want to hear them. Suffice it to say, I was raised thinking that all Americans agreed that it was no longer acceptable to judge others based on skin color. Little by little as I grew up I saw that there were pockets of people who hadn't gotten past this. In the past two decades I've seen even more examples to the point where it seems like there are more than pockets. I don't know if that's due to an increase in racist sentiments, or just more information than was available before. Whatever the case, racism is still a big problem here. Perhaps it went underground for a long time and has come up to the surface. I don't know. Perhaps it was just my upbringing with a black cousin that made me perceive things differently? Again... I don't know. So this museum is rather interesting and...

Hmm... is it possible for the human body to be dehydrated at the extremities but OK towards the core? I ask because my fingers at the tips now compress and stay compressed for a few seconds before snapping back. Never had that before and it's supposed to be a sign of dehydration. NOTE: I drink about 24 oz. of water at work during the day and at least two or three 16 oz tumblers of water at home in the evening/night.
